Self-Harm

When Pain Becomes a Way to Cope.

Self-harm is usually not about wanting to die. It is a way of managing feelings that seem too big to survive any other way: numbness, shame, anger, or a pressure that has no outlet. It offers relief for a moment and then adds its own weight of secrecy. Many people carry it for years without telling anyone.

It deserves care, not judgment. Treatment focuses on what the behavior is doing for you and builds safer ways to meet that need. With therapy grounded in skills and compassion, the urge loses its hold and the body becomes a place to live in rather than a place to punish.
